When revisiting the book critical care by Theresa Brown the most thought-provoking chapter for me was the one when she discussed her experience with loosing her first patient. This was very thought provoking to me because it shinned light on the dark side of a nursing career, death. It made me think more deeply about the various settings nurses work in, how death rates differ depending on the unit you are working on, and their role within that setting. The Nursing 103 learning objective stating, “Describe various settings where nurses practice and their role within the interprofessional team”. I think this course objective ties to this chapter because during this chapter it made me realize how preset nurses are throughout the whole process of caring for their patient, right up until the end. Nurses are front in center in providing patient care and doctors on the other hand are not as present. Nurses primary role is to be their for their patients every step of the way. This chapter reminded me of that because nurse Brown was an extraordinary example; she carried out her patients treatment plan and helped the family during the tragic time of loosing a loved one. The role of nursing is having gratitude and performing the core competencies. I would not create a new category because there is one that fits perfectly already, “role of nursing”.
