Mental health simulation helped me form a better understanding of the behavior exhibited by depression, schizophrenia, substance use disorder, and borderline disorder. Although simulation was specific to those disease processes this experience built on my communication/interviewing skills for another mental health disorder. I was able to complete the connection between classroom and application in a real-life experience. I learn better with hands on scenarios compared to reading textbooks and lectures, so this experience truly enhanced my insight. I believe the biggest challenge was trying to form what to say in a therapeutic response in a fast manner. I often overthink what I say before I say it because I do not want to trigger the patient or response therapeutically therefore it takes me a little longer to respond. I think my group used great teamwork by filling in those quiet moments when one of us was trying to form how to say something. I think another challenge is not being used to the behavior exhibited by the cases. For example, I have never seen a schizophrenic patient, so the actor was the first time I was getting experience with that type of behavior. This is a huge learning experience as now I will be better equipped to handle the behavior when I face it in the real world. I came over this challenge by just ensuring I was being therapeutic and mindful of the patient. The simulation showed me that although the nursing process may be the same every patient is unique and will need a different approach. Patients with the same mental health diagnosis may go about various treatment’s and require a care plan specific to them. Although mental health nursing is not what I ultimately want to do I think this class has equipped me with various tools to deal with mental health in any setting. Everyone needs therapeutic talk and is going through something, even at bed side nursing. Before this class I can say that I was uncomfortable talking with mental health patients because I felt uneducated. With it being the end of the semester and finishing simulation I can say I feel more comfortable and ready to face patients with a mental health diagnosis.
