When asking my patient about the medications she is currently on, she was able to tell me a few of them with exception of some. Of the medications she was able to list to me I asked her if she could tell me anything about those medications such as why she is on them. My concerns regarding my patient’s medication administration include her husband acquiring them, the organization of the medication containers, and her lack of knowledge about their safety parameters. It is important to know what the indication of the medications are to have an understanding of the precautions needed to minimize the risk of adverse effects. Although she knows atorvastatin is for her cholesterol, if she is not maintaining an adequate diet and she administers her atorvastatin when her cholesterol is low that becomes a potential safety concern. My concern for my patient is not related to her age but rather her knowledge of her medications. Her descriptions of medications were vague and minimal. To eliminate the safety concern of medication administration for this patient I would educate her on each medication and the restrictions around each one. When going through her medication list I did not see any medication interactions that would negatively affect the patient. There were also not any duplicate medications or medications that had the same goal. If the patient is not aware of medication interactions or dietary interactions, they may cause harmful effects due to the lack of insight of their medications. Overall, the patient had a general idea of some of the medications she is on but not the safety measures around them. This assignment expanded my knowledge and assessment skills when evaluating patient’s about accessing and administering medications at home.
