Telemedicine

Before learning more in depth about teleICU I did not think it provided patients with the best possible care. Without having the critical care provider physically present there is more room for error. You cannot properly assess a patient who is over a computer. My first thoughts were how do they properly assess heart sounds or lung sounds. As I continued to learn my perspective changed regarding telemedicine. I can see the value of telemedicine as it reduced death rates and allowed physicians to care for more patients in a short amount of time. With the reduction rate of critical care nurses and physicians’ telemedicine provides a way to surveillance patient’s safely when bedside nurses are helping other patients. More light should be shinned around the concept of teleICU as it is helping save lives of critically ill patients. I value the idea knowing this technology has the ability to help more patients and save more lives. I can apply what I learned in class in my future nursing career by utilizing various resources that are available for nurses. Being open minded about future technology and innovations made to help health care staff. When providing care to acute patient’s nurses need to work interprofessional to provide safe care. telemedicine is another interprofessional source for nurses to collaborate with.

I did not have much knowledge around telemedicine before this class. Much of my telemedicine experience has been surrounded by COVID-19. Personally, I did not know telemedicine was utilized before COVID. Before being educated on telemedicine I thought it simply meant having a physical or check-up over the phone or on zoom. I did not know the extent of the technology and how it is utilized in critical care. Not only does telemedicine help save lives but it also coaches new graduate students which is helping shape the upcoming generations.
